PURPOSE:To prepare graphite whisker having superior characteristics easily and inexpensively by heat-treating coal at a specified temp. in the atmosphere of inactive gas. CONSTITUTION:Coal is heat-treated at >=2,000 deg.C, pref. 2,500-3,000 deg.C in the atmosphere of inactive gas. Preferred raw material coal is one having <=75wt% carbon content. The coal is heat-treated as it is or after crushing to appropriate grain size, at >=2,000 deg.C in inactive gas atmosphere. Thus, graphite whisker having 1-10mu diameter and 10-100mu length, and that having <=2mu dia. and <=1,000mu length are formed. If the heat-treating temp. is <2,000 deg.C, the yield of graphite whisker becomes extremely small. |
