The operation of an aluminium plant employing molten-salt electrolysis cells (20) connected in series is decentralised and automatically controlled. The process control and the data collection or processing take place in three hierarchical steps comprising a central main computer (10), a plurality of linking computers (14) connected thereto and microprocessors (18, 26) connected to the latter as cell control computers. The process control and the data collection or processing are done by two microprocessors (18, 26) connected to one or two molten-salt electrolysis cell(s) (20) in each case.
