PURPOSE:To attain accurate reproduction with an optimum servo characteristic by inputting switchingly an error signal to a special phase compensating circuit at the detection of the deteriorated reproduction of a reproducing signal due to overlapped writing. CONSTITUTION:When much unerased part due to overlapped recording is detected through the detection of the deteriorated reproduction of the reproducing signal, an error signal is inputted switchingly from the normal phase compensation circuit 10 of a control characteristic setting section to the special phase compensation circuit 11 and the servo characteristic is varied switchingly. The servo characteristic by the phase compensation circuit 10 is set to a proper servo characteristic to a part without overlapped recording and a part with less unerased overlapped recording and the phase compensation circuit is set to the proper servo characteristic to the part having much unerased overlapped recording. Thus, the normal reproduction part and the special reproduction part are reproduced stably with the tracking control having the optimum servo characteristic respectively.
