The assembly has shelves (16) in step formation each comprising parallel fingers (29a). Between the fingers is an intermediary space which is less than the prescribed cross-sectional dimension for the chips. The fingers are supported at one end by a support rail (23) which extends into the shelf edge formed by the free finger ends on the shelf above. The fingers are pref. quadratic in cross-section, and fitted in the support rail so that their one diagonal is vertical. When viewed from above they form a zig-zag line with their free outer ends.
