PURPOSE:To shorten the seeking time and also to facilitate the easy production of a duplicated file by handling plural disk groups as a single unit and therefore extending easily the capacity of a magnetic disk device. CONSTITUTION:Magnetic disk units U0-Un contain plural magnetic disk groups DE-A and DE-B and a magnetic disk unit control part DKU-N which defines these disk groups as a single unit address and also controls these disk groups in the form of continuous cylinders. Then a magnetic disk control adaptor ADP-N selects the disk groups DE by the cylinder value sent from a magnetic disk controller DKC-N and positions a magnetic head at a physical position. At the same time, the adaptor ADP-N collects the reports given from those disk groups into a single form and gives it to the controller DKC-N.
