PURPOSE:To relax requirements of various measurement conditions by setting the wavelength of the light emitted from a light emitting element and the length of the optical path in a sample lubricant to specific ranges respectively. CONSTITUTION:The light emitted from a light emitting element 13 passes an opticl fiber 14 and is transmitted in accordance with the absorbance of a sample lubricant 11 in a transparent vessel 12 and passes an optical fiber 16 and is transmitted to a photodetector 15 and is converted to an electric signal. In this case, a light emitting element from which the light having 450-950nm wavelength is emitted is used as the element 13, and such vessel 12 is used that the length of the optical path in the lubricant 11 is 10-25mm. Even when the length of the optical path is 25mm and the wavelength is 450nm, the absorbance is >=70% and the intensity of the transmitted ligth is measured without difficulties. Even when the length of the optical path is 10mm and the wavelength is 950nm, the absorbance is 25%, and the measurement is not relatively affected by the precision of dimensions of the cell length of the vessel 12 and the dirt.
