NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (X is O or S; Y is COOZ, SO3Z or PO3Z; Z is H, alkali metal or NH4; l is integer of 1-10; m and n are integer of 1-4; p and q are integer of 4-21). EXAMPLE:1-[ 0-( 1', 3'-Dihexadecyloxypropyl-2-yl )]glycol-10-carboxymethyl-1,10 diaza-4,7,13,16-tetraoxycyclooctadecane. USE:A liquid crystal substance which can be used as a liquid crystal for ordinary liquid crystal apparatus. It can form a membrane capable of permeating a specific ion selectively at a specific temperature and useful as an ion permeation membrane, temperature-controlling switch or sensor. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the compound of formula II with the compound of formula III (W is halogen). The phase separation takes place by dispersing the titled compound in other liquid crystal and a membrane having the above properties can be produced by dispersing the compound in a polymeric substrate.
