PURPOSE:To separate water at low energy cost by integrating a polymer, obtained by insolubilizing the homopolymer or copolymer of methacrylamide expressed by a specified general formula in water, with a fibrous substance. CONSTITUTION:The homopolymer or copolymer of N-alkyl or N-alkylene- substituted methacrylamide shown by formula I (R1 is H or methyl, R2 is H, methyl and ethyl and R3 shows methyl, ethyl and propyl) or formula II [R1 is H and methyl, A shows -(CH2)n- wherein (n) is 4-6 and -(CH2)2-)-(CH2)2-] or the copolymer with other copolymerizable monomers is insolubilized in water to obtain a polymer. The polymer is integrated with a fibrous substance by kneading, etc., to form a water separating and retaining agent.
