PURPOSE:To mechanize operation such as folding cloth articles by moving a rod having a needle obliquely projected forward at the lower surface thereof toward the leading end of the uppermost portion of stacked cloth articles, whereby the articles are hooked sheet by sheet by the lower needle and lifted up. CONSTITUTION:A placing table 1 where articles W are stacked is lifted up by an elevating device 4 every time one sheet of article is handled, so that the reference surface 5 of the uppermost article is always kept at a designated height. A needle obliquely projected forward is mounted at the lower surface of hanging means 8, 8a of a separating device 6, and with the advance of the hanging means 8, 8a, a hooking needle naturally sticks in the cloth end of the uppermost article W. When clamps 11, 11a standing by at a position for lifting up the cloth are operated to clamp the cloth end of the article W, the hanging means 8, 8a are retreated so that the hooking needle naturally comes off the cloth, and the clamps 11, 11a retreated to separate and transfer the cloth article to the succeeding folding process or the like.
