PURPOSE:To ensure that where an arbitrary top margin is to be provided, the top margin can be easily set without executing automatic setting of a predetermined margin, by a system wherein a predetermined top margin is automatically set, and an arbitrary top margin is set by discriminating a specified control code provided at the head of printing data inputted first after turning the page, by a discriminating part. CONSTITUTION:According to a page-turning signal from a printing-controlling part 3, a data-discriminating part 4 is started by a data discrimination starting signal (a), data at the head of inputted printing data for the new page are extracted from an input data buffer 2, and are discriminated. When the head data are a character code (b), a preset quantity (1) corresponding to a top margin M1 is sent form a line feed quantity presetting part 5 to a comparator 8. When the head data are a specified control code (c), a preset quantity (2) is sent to the comparator 8. To perform line feeding corresponding to the preset quantity, the latter is compared with an output form a line feed quantity counter 7 which is inputted as the other input to the comparator 8. The counter 7 is cleared by a paper sensor 12 for detecting the upper end of the paper, and advanced stepwise by a count pulse (d) generated by rotation of a rotary sensor 11 connected directly to a line-feeding motor 10.
