PURPOSE:To enhance printing speed and enable efficient control, by a method wherein an electric current flowing in a coil is converted into a corresponding voltage, and an element for switching the energization of the coil is controlled based on the digital value of the voltage. CONSTITUTION:A controller for driving a printing hammer 2 by a magnetic field generated by passing an electric current to the coil 1 is provide with resistor 3 for covering the current flowing in the coil 1 into a corresponding voltage, and an A-D converter 4 for converting the voltage into a digital value, and a central processor 5 comprises a means 7 for controlling the element 6 for switching the energization of the coil 1 on the basis of the digital value. By the controller, the coil current can be made to be larger in the first half part and reduced in the latter half part, so that the period of time required for returning the hammer can be shortened, and printing speed can be enhanced. In addition, variations in operating performance on a printing hammer basis are reduced, so that printing energy on a product basis can be stabilized.
