PURPOSE:To provide a paper feeder which costs low and has high reliability by operating the first and second clutches according to a paper feed start signal to start feeding paper, disconnecting the second clutch after fixed rotation of power and further automatically releasing the first clutch on detecting paper feeding. CONSTITUTION:According to a paper feed start signal, a solenoid 25 is operated to disengage claws 22a, 22b, so that a gear 16 and a cam 15 start rotating. A paper feed lever 4 is rotated by its dead load, and a forward paper feed roller 3 is pressed to sheets 1, thereby to feed out a sheet 1 from a tray 2. When the cam 15 is further rotated to force a cam follower 13 to again run on the maximum outside-diameter portion, the paper feed lever 4 is returned to its initial position. Subsequently, when the cam 15 substantially makes a turn, a projecting portion 21b is brought into contact with the claw 22b. As a fixed shaft 14 has two spring clutches built-in, however, the cam 15 is again stopped. Further, a continuously rotating roller 10 is stopped the moment the solenoid 25 is turned off after the sheet 1 is detected by detectors 28, 29.
