PURPOSE:To reduce by half the frequency of replacement of a ribbon, by a system wherein ribbons of two sets of ribbon cassettes set for both forward and reverse directions and a printing head are used, and when the ribbon end of one of the ribbon cassette is detected, printing is conducted by using the other ribbon cassette in a succeeding manner, and when both ribbons are completely used, the cassettes are replaced. CONSTITUTION:Where thermal transferprinting is conducted by using the ribbon cassettes set for both forward and reverse directions and the printing head, printing is conducted by alternately using the two ribbons as separately indicated by slant lines and start arrow, namely, when printing in the first line is conducted in the forward (rightward) direction, printing in the next line is conducted in the reverse (leftward) direction. When one of the ribbon cassettes comes to position (a) and the ribbon end is detected, printing is conducted from the opposite side by using the ribbon of the other ribbon cassette and the printing head. When the residual ribbon is completely used and the ribbon end is detected at position (b), both of the ribbon cassettes are simultaneously replaced.
