The subject-matter of the invention is an ink-ribbon cartridge for typewriters or similar machines and a device for operating the ink-ribbon cartridge. Arranged in each case in the ink-ribbon cartridge, the winding hub of the supply reel and its bearing journal are interruptions which come to rest on a common plane when the ink ribbon on the supply reel has come to an end. This plane corresponds to a ray of light which is transmitted from a radiation source to a radiation sensor arranged inside the journal. If there is still sufficient ink ribbon on the winding hub of the supply reel, the ray of light is interrupted. The ink-ribbon cartridge and the device are suitable, in particular, also for ink-coated ink ribbon.
