If, prior to smelting, the minerals which accompany the cassiterite and which contain, in particular, tantalum, niobium or rare earths, are isolated by means of high-intensity wet-magnetic separation (8) and if they are optionally further enriched in a downstream wet or dry process (14, 19), products are obtained from which tantalum, niobium and lanthanides can be extracted much more simply than from the cassiterite slag. <IMAGE>
