CHARACTER RECOGNIZING DEVICE

PURPOSE:To improve the recognizing accuracy of characters even in case the vertical/horizontal ratio of a character pattern is not approximate to '1', by defining the largest width of a sub-character pattern in the input character string as the reference width of a character pattern and extracting an individual character pattern. CONSTITUTION:The pictures from an input part 1 are binary-coded and stored in a memory 2, and the contents of the memory 2 are segmented by a segmenting part 3 into a rectangular form in the form of a character string whose absolute position is previously decided. A sub-character pattern extracting part 4 extracts a sub-character pattern where the continuous characters parts are formed at a character part having >=1 histogram value. Then an individual character pattern extracting part 5 obtains the maximum value Wj out of the width Wi of the sub-character pattern which satisfies ¦Wi-H¦<=alpha (alpha: constant). Then the value Wj is defined as the reference width Ws of a character pattern to obtain the width Wp through the combination of adjacent sub-character patterns. This combination pattern is defined as an individual character pattern. Then a recognizing part 6 refers to a dictionary 7 for extraction of recognition candidate characters and displays them on a display part 8.
