PURPOSE:To attain to enhance the operability of a printer, by detecting whether paper is present in a platen and discriminating whether it is manual insert paper feed or automatic paper feed on the basis of the detection result during operation for bringing a detection apparatus to a paper feed possible state to control the insert of paper. CONSTITUTION:IF.CPU 253 outputs 'discharge command' and 'paper feed command' when received the response of 'paper presence' from MAIN CPU283 and performs the transfer to automatic setting command processing to insert paper. Next, if the response is 'paper absence', IF.CPU235 performs pre-initial command processing to discriminate whether the paper is present each time. When a paper presence state was discriminated, the presence of the paper is not based on the paper feed from ASF2 but based on the manual insert paper feed of an operator and, therefore, automatic setting command processing is taken. Contrarily, if a paper absence state is discriminated, the paper feed from ASF2 is judged and paper feed command processing is taken and, after the paper feed from ASF2 was performed, paper setting operation is carried out.
