CONTROL OF CENTRIFUGAL PIPE CASTING OPERATION

A centrifugal pipe casting process, in which a pipe having a bell end is cast by supplying molten metal to the casting machine through a trough is controlled by (i) determining a relationship between the melt flow velocity in the trough and the bell forming time; (ii) storing the relationship for reference; (iii) determining, during casting, a value related to the actual melt flow velocity in the trough, pref. by measuring the time taken for the melt to pass between two spaced points; (iv) computing an optimum bell forming time from the value in (iii) by reference to the stored relationship in (ii); and (v) controlling initiation of relative movement of the trough and the casting machine in accordance with the computed time of (iv).
