PURPOSE:To attain various KANA (Japanese syllabary)/KANJI (Chinese character) conversion methods by providing a detecting mechanism for external KANA /KANJI conversion module to perform the external KANA/KANJI convesion if an external KANA/KANJI conversion module exists when a KANA/KANJI conversion key is pushed and then to perform the internal KANA/KANJI conversion if no said conversion module exists. CONSTITUTION:An external KANA/KANJI module can be put into a slot 18. The character codes supplied from a keyboard 15 are stored temporarily in a RAM 12. When a KANA/KANJI conversion key is pushed on the keyboard 15, a program in a ROM 13 starts an external KANA/KANJI conversion module for execution of the KANA/KANJI conversion as long as the conversion module is put into the slot 18. If no conversion module exists, an internal KANA/KANJI conversion module within the ROM 13 is started for execution of the KANA/ KANJI conversion. The result of this conversion is sent to the RAM 12 or an external storage 16. Then the converting process is displayed at a display circuit 14.
