PURPOSE:To change over simply both high-resolution reading and high-speed reading function by extracting an output signal from each element or plural elements at the same time. CONSTITUTION:The number of elements of a photoelectric conversion element array 1 is the same as that of a conventional type, two shift registers are used, the 1st shift register 41 handles elements of odd numbers and the 2nd shift register 42 treats elements of even order numbers respectively. In closing a double-throw changeover switch 13 to the upper position, a gate signal is outputted alternately at the same time as a start signal, the switching is repeated sequentially from the 1st gate to the final gate (128th) and the function is entirely the same as the conventional type. In closing the changeover switch 13 to the lower position, since a clock signal from a terminal 10 is inputted to the 1st and 2nd shift registers 41, 42 at the same time, a start signal is inputted to an ST terminal 5, and the 1st and 2nd gates are closed at the same time, the 127-th and 128-th gates are closed by the 64-th clock pulse and one repetition is finished. In this case, one repetition time is a half the time of the mode 1 and the high speed operation is realized simply.
