PURPOSE:To attain quickly the registration and reference of stored graphic data produced by a user by providing an area for graphic directory to a storage means and displaying this graphic directory on a screen together with indication of the position when a pattern is produced and edited. CONSTITUTION:When a reference is given to a registered pattern, a graphic directory is displayed on a CRT by means of a coordinate system DCS displayed on the scope of a CRT. Under such conditions, an optional graphic directory pat is picked up by a pointing device, etc. Thus an arithmetic operation is carried out to decide a specific one of sections of the system RCS on a memory to which the picked-up coordinates belong. Then the reference is given to the corresponding section file and the relevant graphic pattern is quickly displayed on a work area of the CRT. Therefore, an operator can start immediately a desired graphic editing operation for the displayed graphic pattern. The registration of patterns is also possible by picking up an idle area of the graphic directory.
