PURPOSE:To attain to enhance the operability of a printer, by detecting whether paper is present in a platen at the intial stage of paper insert and finishing the paper inserting operation when the paper is absent even if a set amount of paper feed operation is performed at the time of paper inserting operation. CONSTITUTION:If an ASF switch 26B is ON state, IF.CPU253 outputs 'paper presence check command' to NAIN CPU283 and, when IF.CPU253 received the response of 'paper presence', said CPU383 outputs 'delivery command' to MAIN CPU283 because paper remains in a platen 31 and jamming is generat ed when next paper feed is performed to finish delivery command processing and, when a ready state is obtained, IF.CPU253 outputs 'discharge command'. Then, the transfer to automatic setting command processing is taken to insert the paper. Therefore, if a paper presence state is not obtained even if the platen 31 is rotated at this time, paper inserting operation is finished at that point of time.
