A circular knitting machine has mechanically controlled selection devices with selection carriages which are capable of acting on selector extensions or with oscillating selection levers actuable via magnets. The carriage devices are interchangeable with the lever devices and the two types are interchangeable without the exchange of the selectors. The selection possibilities of the machine can thereby be extended in a simple way. The carriage devices comprise carriages which have a middle longitudinally extending orifice with a catch tooth which is located on one longitudinal side and which can come into engagement with a diametral longitudinal face of a vertical rotatable pin, the arrangement being such that the face comes into engagement only with the teeth of carriages which are prepositioned in a further-advanced position in dependence on the work programme. The levers of the lever devices have a centre of rotation which is located at a higher level than the carriage plane. The number of selection levers can be smaller than the number of carriages, and the levers can act on heights of extensions which alternate with extension heights not involved in the selection.
