PURPOSE:To obtain the titled resin of a relatively high refractive index and a low dispersion, by reacting a mercapto group-containing alkaline earth metal carboxylate with an epoxy group-containing vinyl monomer. CONSTITUTION:An alkaline earth metal oxide or carbonate (e.g., BaO) is reacted with a compound of formula I (wherein n is 1-5) in a polar solvent such as dimethyl sulfoxide, and the salt is precipitated by dropping a poor solvent such as ethyl ether, filtered and dried to obtain a mercapto group-containing alkaline earth metal carboxylate (A). A mixture of 10-70wt% component A and other monomers copolymerizable therewith (e.g., methacrylic acid) is reacted in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator.
