PRODUCTION OF OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:To produce an optical fiber having improved mechanical strength, by spinning a preform having a porous quartz glass layer, containing a transition metal, and provided on the outer periphery of a clad. CONSTITUTION:A clad material 3 and core material 2 are deposited on the inner wall of a porous quartz glass tube 4 containing a transition metal by the chemical vapor deposition and the quartz glass tube 4 containing the clad material 3 and core material 2 is then collapsed to give a preform 1, which is drawn into a wire while heat softening to form an optical fiber 5. The quartz glass tube 4 of the resultant optical fiber 5 is then heat-treated and transparentized to form a light adsorption layer 8.
