PURPOSE:To form a picture always to a proper position of a recording sheet even if the side shift of an original is generated by displacing an image formation lens by a moving distance claculated in accordance with the side shift of the original and copying magnification. CONSTITUTION:An automatic original carrying device is provided with a side shift detector 22 and an one-dimensional solid image sensor 22C is stored in the detector 22. At the time of copying, the end part of an original '0' is projected to the sensor 22C to detect the side shift DELTAL from a prescribed position. An arithmetic circuit 24 calculates the moving distance S=m.DELTAL/(1+m) of an image formation lens 50 on the basis of the side shift DELTAL and the copying magnification (m) to displace the lens 50 through a driving circuit 26. Even if the original '0' is shifted to the side, a copying picture can be formed always on a proper position of the recording sheet.
