PURPOSE:To execute the effective function of an ECC system except a chip without damaging chip integrating degree by making a code word only including one bit out of respectively plural different bits into the object of the ECC by the error detecting/correcting (ECC) function word of plural bits accessed simultaneously. CONSTITUTION:A data input of four bits, etc., for the memory cell of four pieces, etc., of a memory cell array 2 accessed simultaneously at the time of writing the data is successively processed for four cycles, and written in the array 2 together with the ECC word different for a memory cell from a write checking bit generating circuit 1. The input is processed by the successive cycle at the time of reading simultaneously four cells, etc., from the array 2, and a code word including one bit comes to be the object of the ECC at the ECC system except the chip of the array 2 of a pair of read checking bit generating circuits 3, a syndrome generating circuit 4, a syndrome decoder 5, a data correcting circuit 6, etc. Thus, the ECC system except the chip can be made effectively functional without damaging the chip integrating degree.
