PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for the conventional white background plate and to reduce the cost of an electrochromic display element by providing a layer contg. a white oxidation reduction material on the counter electrode of said element. CONSTITUTION:A display electrode 2 is formed on the insulating substrate 1 of the EC display element and an electrochromic material layer 4 is formed thereon. On the other hand, the counter electrode material layer 6 consisting of zinc hexacyanoferrate etc. as the white oxidation reduction material is formed on the counter electrode 7 on the insulating substrate 8. An electrolyte 5 is injected between the electrodes 2 and 7 to form an ECD. The sharp coloration on the white background is displayed if +0.2V is impressed to the display electrode 2 of such panel wth the electrode 7 as a reference. The need for the conventional white background plate is thus eliminated and the reduction of the cost is made possible.
