PURPOSE:To enable the number of switches of an automatic paper feeder to be reduced and enable the functions of the switches to be performed by switches of a printer, by a method wherein the functions of switches provided on a printer are automatically switched to the functions of switches provided on an automatic paper feeder, when the paper feeder is mounted. CONSTITUTION:In connection signal wires for a main body 12 of the printer and the automatic paper feeder 13, a signal wire 19 is provided which is made to be active when the feeder 13 is connected to the main body 12. When the signal wire 19 is detected on the main body 12 side, a printing-controling part 17 changes the functions of an LF switch 2, an FF switch 3, a TOF switch 4, a SEL switch 5. When the automatic paper feeder is connected to the printer, each of the switch functions of LF, FF, TOF, SEL is changed to one or a plurality of functions or a quite different function to substitute for the functions of an INSERT switch 7, an EJECT switch 8, a FWD FEED switch 9, a REV FEED switch 10 which have been mounted on the automatic paper feeder 13. Accordingly, it is unnecessary to provide the automatic paper feeders with switches, and reductions in cost and size can be facilitated.
