<p>A method and apparatus is disclosed for selectively providing to a human operator/driver selected highway information regarding types of services available at selected locations along a roadway. Selected highway information is stored and made available with respect to distance markers such as mile markers (or kilometer markers), along a roadway. For example, a mass plug-in data cartridge storage media permanently stores, in digital form, data related to services (and other pertinent information) available along a selected roadway. This data is indexed according to distance marker indicators along the roadway. A ROM (read only memory) may be used to store information and a RAM (random access memory), referred to as "scratch pad memory", may be used for temporarily receiving and storing data. A ROM contains a control program for controlling the apparatus. A keyboard for input data entry allows the operator/driver to provide the necessary input data to indicate the selection of highway from which he desires roadway information. Preferably an alpha-numeric character display is included for providing a visual indication of the selected roadway information. A speech synthesizer may also be included for audibilizing the selected information. The complete system is preferably controlled by a micro-processor which itself is controlled by a program contained in ROM. The micro-processor may be any suitable standard micro-processor commercially available.</p> |
