PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having excellent surface characteristics such as running stability, durability and lubricity by providing a thin tantalum carbide film on a thin magnetic metallic film. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium is constituted of a non- magnetic substrate 1, the thin magnetic metallic film 2 and the tantalum carbide film 3. The thickness of the film 2 is preferably 0.05-1.0mum. The film 3 can be formed by a CVD, plasma CVD, reaction vapor deposition, sputtering, reaction sputtering or ion plating method. The tantalum carbide is exemplified by TaC, Ta2C and the eutectic mixture thereof. The reliability of the wear resistance and corrosion resistance improves but the space from a head increases and a so-called 'spacing loss' increases if the thickness of the film 3 is large. The long-period durability is lost if the thickness is too small. The preferable range of the thickness is therefore 50-300Angstrom . |
