PURPOSE:To measure quickly the element concn. in a molten metal with good accuracy by providing the solid oxide of an intended element to be measured as an auxiliary electrode to the surface where a solid electrolyte and the molten metal contact and measuring oxygen potential with an oxygen concn. cell. CONSTITUTION:A reference electrode 4 which applies the prescribed oxygen potential to the inside surface of the solid electrolyte 3 consisting of stabilized ZrO2 is provided. The outside surface of the solid electrolyte 3 is brought into contact with the molten metal 1 and the solid oxide MnOm is provided as the auxiliary electrode 2 on the surface of the solid electrolyte 3. Here, M denotes the measuring element, O denotes oxygen and m, n denote integers. A quasi-chemical balance zone 10 of nM+mO= MnOm is formed around the auxiliary electrode 2. The activity of the element M in the molten metal is then converted by the auxiliary electrode 2 to the oxygen potential and the potential 7 is detected by the molten metal 1 and the reference electrode 4 as the oxygen concn. cell, by which the element M is measured. Since the solid oxide of the measuring element is used as the auxiliary electrode, the quick measurement of the element concn. in the molten metal with high accuracy is made possible. |
