摘要 <p>PURPOSE:To obtain a ferroelectric liquid crystal element which can provide fully satisfactory characteristics by disposing fibers having a specific size ratio as spacers together with a ferroelectric chiral smectic liquid crystal between a pair of substrates. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal element 300 has the substrate 301 (flexible glass, flexible plastic) and the substrate 302 (glass plate). Striped-transparent electrodes 303 and orientation control film 304 formed of an insulating material thereof are coated on the substrate 301. The fibers (glass fibers) 307 are disposed as the spacers to hold the spacing between the substrates together with the ferroelectric chiral smectic liquid crystal 308 having non-spiral structure between the substrates 302 and 303. The fibers 307 have a cylindrical shape and have the relation expressed by the formula when the diameter thereof is designated as d(mum) and the average length l thereof as (mum). The generation of the orientation defects is thoroughly eliminated particularly when the relation is made 3d<=l<=20d.</p>
