<p>Catalyst for the simultaneous demetallisation and desulphurisation of heavy crudes and residues comprises an alumina support impregnated with a first impregnating metallic cpd. the metal belonging to Gp. VIB deposited on the support material to comprise 5-30wt.% of the catalyst, calculated as oxide; the impregnated support being subsequently impregnated with a second impregnating metallic cpd. the metal belonging to Gp. VIII deposited on the support to comprise 0.1-8wt.% of the catalyst, calculated as oxide; the first and second impregnating cpds. being reacted with a sulphur-contg. reagent after deposition to produce catalytically active sulphides so that the catalyst has simultaneous demetallising and desulphurising activity in which the percentage ratio of each effect approaches unity over a useful life in excess of 80 days. The catalyst has the physical properties of 0.8-0.9 ml/g total pore volume, 200-300 Angstroms average pore dia., and signal band strength ratios, as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, I(Me VIB)/I(refractory metal) of 5-8 and I(Me VIII)/I(refractory metal) of 1-5.</p> |
