Polyamides of trialkylacetic acids and polyamines are new compounds which have an oily character at washing temperatures of 10-90 degree C and can be adsorbed from the washing and rinsing water for fibrous material such as laundry consisting of synthetic fabrics, e.g. polyesters, which laundry tends to be electrostatically charged, and they reduce the electrostatic charge or inhibit the build- up thereof in such materials. Such polyamides, e.g. of neodecanoic acid and an alkylenepolyoxyalkylenetriamine, can be included in detergent compositions, in compositions for addition to rinsing water and in compositions for addition to laundry in a drier, and in some cases it may even be desirable to add bentonite powder or agglomerate to such compositions to aid softening and other physical properties of the laundry. Washing and rinsing operations are described in which the polyamide is present in the washing or rinsing water with or without additional small amounts of quaternary ammonium salt which improves the antistatic effect on laundry containing synthetic fabrics of polyamide and acetate. By virtue of the fact that the amount of quaternary salt can be reduced thanks to the presence of the polyamide according to the invention, it does not cause harmful deposits on the washing treated, and reduction of the cleaning capacity because of the reaction with anionic detergent is no longer an inevitable consequence.
