Previously unknown human insulin precursors of the formula B-X-Y-A, where X and Y are both lysine or arginine, are prepared by culturing a yeast host which is transformed with a replicatable vector which is able to express, in yeast, a DNA sequence which encodes the human insulin precursor. Human insulin is prepared by recovering the insulin precursors from the culture medium and converting the insulin precursors into human insulin by means of enzymic treatment. <IMAGE>
