PURPOSE:To enable the residual amount of a ribbon to be detected and displayed, by providing a sensor for detecting the residual amount of the ribbon enclosed in a ribbon cassette, and a display device for displaying the residual amount. CONSTITUTION:A starting mark 15 and an ending mark 16 are provided respectively at the left and right ends of a window 14 for checking the residual amount of the ribbon 17 therethrough which is provided at an upper surface of the ribbon cassette 13. When a boundary B between a reflective surface 18 where the ribbon 17 is absent and a part where the ribbon 17 is present is detected during rightward movement of a carriage 10, a CPU calculates the displacement from the ending mark 16 to the boundary B. When the starting mark 15 is detected, the carriage 10 is reversely moved leftward, and when the boundary is detected during this movement, the CPU calculates the displacement from the mark 15 to the boundary B. The residual amount of the ribbon 17 can be calculated from the moving amounts thus calculated, and is displayed on a residual amount display device 23 in the form of figure 24. |
