SEPARATOR FOR SEALED LEAD STORAGE BATTERY

PURPOSE:To increase the electrolyte-holding ability of a separator for a sealed lead storage battery by adding a binder when mixing glass fibers with specific means diameter and a micropowder of an acid-proof inorganic substance to make the separator. CONSTITUTION:A glass fiber paper is prepared by mixing glass fibers with a mean diameter of at least 3 mum with 30-60wt% of the total amount of the separator of a micropowder of an acid-proof inorganic substance such as silica or foamy pearlite. During making the separator paper, 2-5wt% of the total amount of the separator of a binder such as gelatin or starch is added. The relatively thick glass fibers of the thus obtained glass fiber separator have inferior electrolyte-holding ability which is improved by adding the acid-proof micropowder. Besides, separation and scattering of the micropowder is prevented from occurring during the assembly of the battery by adding the binder. Accordingly, due to the good hydrophilic property of the micropowder, it is possible to maintain the electrolyte-holding ability of the separator at a high level.
