<p>The wheel has a hollow axle (2), mounted in bearings on a fixed horizontal shaft (17). Only part of the lower half of the wheel is submerged. The rotor consists of four blade assemblies (3) each with three radial spokes set at 120 deg. to each other. Each assembly is offset from the other three, so that the rotor has twelve equi-spaced spokes. - Each spoke consists of two side rods (6) connected by cross-braces (7). A pressure surface is formed by three sets of three thin plates (11) hinged together and hinged to the rods. As the spokes leave the water the plates hinge, allowing swift spillage of the water. The four assemblies are isolated by screen plates (20) when out of the water. (1/4)</p> |
