PURPOSE:To prevent effectively the deterioration in sound quality due to saturation when dubbing is carried out between different types of recording/ reproducing devices, by detecting and displaying the maximum value of the digital signal under recording or reproduction. CONSTITUTION:The output of an A/D converting circuit 3a is also supplied to a maximum value detecting part 10 via a switch S in parallel to a recording action. An absolute value detecting circuit 11 within the part 10 detects the absolute value of the digital signal under recording and supplies it to a comparator 12 and a latch circuit 13 respectively. The new maximum value of the output of the circuit 11 is latched each time by the circuit 13. When the maximum values delivered from the circuit 13 are continuously coincident with the upper limit allowable level, a message of this fact is displayed on a display circuit 24 by a control circuit 6. When receiving this message, an operator operates a variable attenuator 2 for control of sound volume to reduce the sound recording level. Thus the recording is carried out again.
