PURPOSE:To obtain a phenolic carbon fiber having high strength economically in high yield, by charging phenolic resin fiber into a carbonization furnace at a specific density and heat-treating and carbonizing the fiber under a specific condition while introducing an inert gas to the furnace at a specific rate of flow. CONSTITUTION:A phenolic resin fiber is introduced usually under relaxed condition into a carbonization furnace at a density of <=0.3g/cm<3> and heated at a heating rate of <=350 deg.C/hr under the stream of an inert gas at a volume flow rate of >=5hr<-1>. When the fiber is heated to 700 deg.C, the temperature is lowered in an inert gas atmosphere to obtain the objective carbon fiber. The phenolic resin fiber can be produced e.g. by melt-spinning a novolac resin having a number-average molecular weight of 700-1,500 and curing the fiber with a mixed aqueous solution of an acidic catalyst and an aldehyde. The fiber is used in the form of woven cloth, braid, felt, chopped strand, etc.
