PURPOSE:To make up the deficiency of the electrolysis in the edge parts of a steel sheet and to remove satisfactorily fats and oils from the entire surface thereof by providing separately edge anode and cathode electrodes so as to sandwich the ends of the steel sheet by shifting the positions thereof in the moving direction of the steel sheet. CONSTITUTION:The edge anode electrodes 5 and edge cathode electrodes 6 are provided, separately from anode and cathode electrodes 2, 3, so as to sandwitch the edge parts of the steel sheet 1 and to face each other in the positions shifted from each other in the moving direction of the sheet 1. The fats and oils sticking to the surface of the sheet 1 are removed when the sheet 1 passes between the electrodes 2 and 3. On the other hand, the electric current flowing from the electrodes 5 flows to the sheet 1 through the electrolyte and flows further through the inside of the sheet 1 toward the moving direction. The current passes again through the electrolyte and flows toward the electrodes 6. The current density in the edge parts of the sheet 1 is thereby increased and the rate of electrolysis is increased and therefore the fats and oils in these parts are effectively removed.
