PURPOSE:To produce a glass fiber with increased alkali resistance by coating a heat-treated film of polyvinyl alcohol and a water-repellant film consisting of a vinyl monomer, etc., in plural layers. CONSTITUTION:In a glass fiber whose surface is coated with at least 2 layers of films, at least one layer of the film is formed with polyvinyl alcohol or modified polyvinyl alcohol and heat-treated at >=150 deg.C to decrease the hydrophilicity. At least another layer is formed with one or >=2 kinds of water- repellant substances among a vinyl monomer, a vinylidene monomer or its copolymer, rubber, epoxy resin, silicone resin, formaline resin, an organosilicon compd. and an organometallic compd. Consequently, an alkali-resistant glass fiber suitable as the reinforcing material of cement, etc., can be obtained at a low cost.
