PURPOSE:To enlarge an amt. of packed catalyst and to make an apparatus more compact in an apparatus for producing hydrogen by the pyrolysis of methanol by arranging plural annular catalyst cylinders concentrically in a reactor. CONSTITUTION:A hydrogen producing apparatus is constructed by arranging annular catalyst cylinders 2'-1, 2'-2, 2'-3 concentrically and in plural layers with a distance to each other in a reactor 1. Raw material gas comprising a mixture of methanol and steam is introduced through a raw material gas feeding nozzle 4 into one of the catalyst layer 15 divided by a partition wall 2'' in the annular catalyst cylinder. The gas is deflected to flow into a catalyst layer 14 and thermal decomposition of steam reforming proceeds. Then, the gas formed by the reaction is discharged from a formed gas discharging nozzle 5.
