PURPOSE:To prevent a vehicle from falling into a dangerous condition, by stopping the operation of a steering mechanism upon failure. CONSTITUTION:Torque in the direction opposite to a steering direction is effected in a motor 4 in such a relationship that a torque due to a steering reaction force generated in a rotary shaft 2 has a predetermined associating relation with respect to a torque due to reaction from a road surface which is generated between a steering mechanism 9 and a motor 15. Further, signals from both angle sensors 6, 22 are compared with each other. If the steering mechanism 9 has no predetermined associating relation with respect to the steering angle of a steering wheel, the supply of power to the motor 15 is cut off. Since no drive force is effected to the steering mechanism 9 by the motor 15, a spring returns steered wheels 7, 8 to their neutral positions. |
