PURPOSE:To obtain a high-strength glass fibers adequate for reinforcement of a plastic product by adjusting the content of SiO2 of the slag by-produced in the smelting stage of silicon manganese to a specific ratio and forming the same to the fibers. CONSTITUTION:The fused silicon manganese slag S emitted from an electric furnace is supplied through a spout 1 to a melting furnace 2 and a component adjusting agent is added to the slag to adjust the content of SiO2 in the slag S to 44-49wt%. An oxidative gas or inert gas is blown from the furnace bottom to such slag S and an oxidative gas from the top of the furnace to oxidize the metallic manganese, carbon, etc., in the slag S. The slag S is then introduced into a front furnace 3 and is adjusted to the temp. suitable for spinning; thereafter the slag is spun as the single fibers from many tips provided to the bottom of a bushing 4 and is solidified. The single fibers are bundled and arrayed to about 200-400 pieces to form strands 6 which are taken up on winders 5. The high-strength glass fibers having the excellent tensile strength are thus inexpensively produced.
