A gas-charging device of compact form is described which has a high pressure-recovery capacity. The device has a pressure-recovery section which has at least one and preferably a plurality of sharp-edged steps or recesses in a wall, the steps or recesses running transversely to the flow direction of the gas. The device can have a folded configuration, the flow path bending sharply at the downstream end of the pressure-recovery section. The device is suitable for mixing air and oxygen in order to produce a breathing-gas mixture in a nasal mask or a trachea tube in a medical breathing system such as, for instance, a ventilator.
