PURPOSE:To provide the title apparatus capable of easily conducting animation and color display with high contrast, by inputting light signals while scanning into a specific image forming element, heating the image forming element to form an image corresponding to image information and, if necessary, erasing the image. CONSTITUTION:An image forming element 10 having excellent durability and reliability is formed using a substrate 1, a radiation absorption layer 2, an image forming layer 3 comprising a film of a mixture of an org. compd. molecule having heat phase transition properties with a photo-functional molecule and a protective substrate. A desired position, e.g., position 5 of the image forming layer 3 is irradiated with light 6. The produced pattern in respect of photochemical change is directly or indirectly read out or displayed while exposing to light rays 7 for lighting. The predetermined position 5 of the image forming element 10 is irradiated with light input signals 12 while a light signal inputting means 11 is scanned with a light signal scanning means, and, at the same time, irradiated with radiation 14 such as infrared rays with a heating means 13 to form a two-dimensional image corresponding to image information on the image forming layer 3 of the element 10. The position where erasion of image is required is heated with a heating means 13 to a erasing temp. to heat the mixture film of the image forming layer, thereby erasing the desired image.
