Silencer

The invention relates to a silencer of especially flat construction for motor vehicles. Inside it the gas-carrying ducts run side by side in one or more planes. Owing to their different length they produce silencing by interference. Additional hollow spaces connected blind to the ducts produce additional silencing due to the effect of energy storage and energy release, the admissions to these blind connected hollow spaces having a restricting and thereby also a silencing effect due to their small cross-section. With the silencer dismantled, emission control devices, for example catalytic converter bodies or soot filter inserts can be inserted in extensions of the gas-carrying ducts in the form of easily replaceable cartridges.
