Iron and, if appropriate, manganese and vanadium are removed from titanium oxide-containing material having a content of the oxides thereof by means of chlorine-containing gases without an addition of carbon in a chlorination zone at temperatures of above 900 DEG C. Oxygen and volatile iron chlorides and, if appropriate, manganese chloride and vanadium chlorides are thus set free. The gas phase flowing out of the chlorination zone is allowed to react in a downstream oxygenation zone at temperatures from 550 to 900 DEG C to form chlorine and metal oxides. Finally, the chlorine-containing gases are separated at temperatures of less than 300 DEG C from the metal oxides contaminated with unconverted fractions of the metal chlorides, and the chlorine-containing gases are returned to the chlorination zone. |
